2001 POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS IN THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS
The de jure concept of the population was used, that is, the total of all usual residents;
The total population count was 20,014 persons: 19,886 was considered the non-institutional or household population and 128 as the institutional population; compared to a non-institutional population

of 11,465 in 1990.
In terms of household population, the female count was 9,989 while the male count was 9897;
Provo had the highest number of household population (13,021); Grand Turk (3,976), Salt Cay (120), South Caicos (1,063), Middle Caicos (301), North Caicos (1,347), and Parrot Cay (58);
Turks and Caicos nationals account for 10,335 of the total household population while Haitians account for 5,027;
The dependent population which is the youth population (under 15 years) and the retired or old age population (over 64 years) account for 32.43 % (or 6,450) of the total household population in 2001 compared to 37.17 % in 1990.
The working age or economically active population (15-64 years) increased from 62.83 % in 1990 to 67.57% in 2001;
There were 7,254 households with an average household size of 2.74 persons compared to 3,391 households with an average household size of 3.3 persons in 1990;
There were 30% 1-person households in 2001 and 70 % of all households had a male as the head of the household;
The average number of bedrooms per household was 1.87 with an average of 1.47 persons per bedroom;
Most households lived in separate houses (3,486) or apartments (2,699);
Most households either rented (4,178) or owned (2,583) their dwelling unit;
