2001 POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS IN THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS (cont'd.)

  • Working population was 14,193 with a labour force
         was 11,275 (10,180 were employed); unemployment
         rate was 9.71 %; youth unemployment rate was
         18.38 %; and labour force participation rate was
         79.44 %;

  • 43.4% o(6,865) of the population 10 years and over have attained a
         secondary level of education while 22.2 % (3,511) have a primary education
         and 9.2 % (1,461) with a university education;


  • In terms of occupational grouping, elementary occupations and services
         employ most persons (37.4%) with hotels, restaurant and tourism,
         construction and general government being the major employers in terms
         of industrial group (48.7%);


  • Average household income was US$30,464.

    Swine Flu is a new influenza-like illness (ILI) first detected in Mexico on March 18, 2009. Swine Flu can be spread through contact with infected pigs or environments contaminated with the virus. Human-to-human spread has also been documented and is thought to be transmitted through droplet infection when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
