The Department of Economic Planning and Statistics was established in 1998 following the restructuring of the Finance
Department.
|
|
|
In the early days, the Department was mainly an Economic
Planning Unit (EPU) and was primarily concerned with coordinating the formulation and implementation of the
Public Sector Investment Program, including resource mobilization by borrowing and relations with international
development partners. The small core staff also oversaw the statistics function, which has now evolved into a
full pledge Statistics Unit. Over the years, the work program of the Economic Planning Unit has expanded to
include: economic analysis, strategic planning, public/private sector partnerships and national development
planning.
The Economic Planning Unit is consulted on most social and economic development issues facing the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The highest point in the Turks and Caicos Islands is located in the uninhabited island of East Caicos. On the north of East Caicos is Flamingo Hill with an elevation of 156 feet, while the dangerous Philips Reef guards the coast. The island is also best known for its plantation ruins and cave artwork.
