Grand Turk, May 30, 2006 - Work is still very much ongoing in terms of the preparation of a ten year National Development Plan for the Turks and Caicos Islands.
On Wednesday, May 24, 2006, a National Workshop was held with members of the 27 sectoral and sub committees geared at reviewing and deciding on the broad development options and to begin the prioritisation of policies and programmes in this critically important stage of the preparation process.
Facilitating the workshop was Dr. Ralph Henry, eminent Development Economist- and a six member team from Kairi Consultants- comprised of a fiscal affairs specialist, a senior sociologist, an environmental specialist, urban planners and a professor of civil engineering.
The objectives of the workshop was to provide an opportunity to:
share and Discuss the results of the Situational Analysis
draft and gain consensus on the National Vision Statement that will
guide future development of the Turks and Caicos Islands, and
identify, discuss and gain consensus on the Options for future
development of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Topics highlighted for discussion included:
Economic Issues
Social Services Issues
Infrastructural Issues
Land Use Planning and Environment Issues
Legislative and Institutional Issues
The Ten Year National Development Plan was launched on October 27, 2005
and is spearheaded as a joint initiative between the Department of Planning and the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics. These departments are working along with the project consultants- KAIRI Consultants out of Trinidad and Tobago.
The development plan aims to provide long-term vision for the country’s development and a strategic framework for Government and Private Sector activities.
