September 27, 2007, Providenciales- The Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands, Honorable, Michael Misick, surrounded by cabinet ministers, ceremoniously signed an agreement in partnership with the United Nations Development Bank outlining the framework for the development of the Turks and Caicos Islands during the next ten-years. The agreement comes with a price tag of approximately two hundred million dollars per year, for the next ten years or two billion dollars.
The announcement came at the beginning of the two-day National Development Planning Workshop being held at the Beaches Resort in Providenciales yesterday. More than 100-people are attending the workshop representing; small businesses, government departments, consultants, educators as well as representatives from all Islands.
The Honorable Premier, Michael Misick, says it is important for the government to seek the views of the general public about matters of national importance. He says that the development of our country is the ultimate important issue for consultation and that is why all of the stakeholders have been brought together to offer another round of suggestions about the plan.
The Premier says, when he came to office, he made a strategic decision that would accelerate the pace of development, and seek upscale market development. He says that his administration certainly will make sure that no island is left behind. The Premier says that the government has gone on a crusade to make sure that every island has anchored development, so that islanders will know longer have to leave their homes like ‘back in the day’, to seek employment. The opportunities that are available in Provo will be available in all parts of the country.
The Deputy Premier, The Honorable Floyd Hall says, The Turks and Caicos economy has grown in excess of 10% a year and the population has grown to more than 30-thousand. Development opportunities have spread to all of the Islands through The anchor tourism initiative. He says the country has embarked on an ambitious infrastructure plan for all of the islands while empowering many Turks and Caicos Islanders.
