economic success of the Islands’ economy in recent decades. The TCI boasts a natural-based tourism product with major attractions such as Cays (Iguana, Water, Shell, Little Water, St. George and Ambergris), Coral Gardens, Turtle Cove Marina, Leeward Marina, Sapodilla Bay, Provo golf course, caves, beaches, conch farms, reefs, scuba diving sites, etc.; attracting every year a large number of tourists and offering them the experience they expected.
Since 2000, there was an increasing trend of tourist activity in the islands.
The Survey of Departing Visitors was first conducted during three three week periods in Summer 1995 and two three week periods in Winter 1995. The responsibility for the
conduct of the Survey rested with the TCI Tourist Board in collaboration with the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO). The framework was designed by the
Caribbean Tourism Development Programme (CTDP) and funding was provided by the Commission of the European Union.
The Survey was introduced in many Islands so as to obtain regular information at a regional level. The use of a
standardized methodology in terms of data collection, processing and presentation was meant to enable comparison of data
across countries and across time.
Scope and Coverage
Only visitors fifteen years and over were interviewed. In cases where persons were traveling together as a family or group, personal characteristics were elicited from the respondent only. Expenditure data were obtained from the person identified as the Head, on behalf of the group. The respondent was required to state the number of persons covered in the reported expenditure. In cases where persons in a group have separate expenditure arrangements, these persons were required to complete individual questionnaires.
A person is considered a visitor if he/she travels to and stay in the Islands for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes, other than the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the TCI.
